What is a Traeger Burger?
Traeger Burger gets its name from the brand itself. It comes with a juicy burger patty that is cooked, smoked or grilled in the Traeger, and of course your favorite condiments to top it off.
Traeger is a brand known for its versatility, quality and advanced features. It has been the talk of the town for all the right reasons! Unlike other grills, Traeger grills do not use direct heat, it uses wood-fueled fire to not only cook up your food but give it an extra flavor as well!
How To Cook Hamburgers on a Traeger?
Cooking burgers (or anything really) on Traeger is simple and totally effortless. Traeger is almost like an oven, all you have to do is put your burger patties inside and set the desired temperature and timer, and boom! You get that hot and smoky patties to assemble and serve. So, forget grilling and start traegering!
How To Grill Burgers on a Traeger Pellet Grill?
There is no rocket science required here. Traeger Pellet Grills aren’t famous for nothing. It is best because it is super easy to use and does not ask you to constantly monitor it like a 5 year old child. As long as you have enough wood pellets, and set your temperature right, there is really nothing to worry about.
Below are the detailed instructions on how to make a Traeger Burger.
- Preparing The Burger Patties
It is important to know what kind of meat you are going for to make your Burgers. Whatever you choose, make sure your beef comes with at least lean to fat ratio of 80:20. The fat makes the burger patties juicier and prevents it from drying up.
Once you got the perfect beef for your burger, mince it in a food processor or hand chop it yourself. Divide the 2 pound ground beef into 4 ½-pound, roll them all into balls, and smash them flat to get your burger patties.
Make sure the size of patties is greater than the burger buns, as meat tends to shrink during cooking.
- Seasoning The Patties
For seasoning, we will be adding 2 tablespoons of BBQ Sauce and 1 tablespoon of Traeger Rub.
This can go two ways. You can either season the meat by mixing it well with BBQ sauce and Traeger Rub before transforming it into burger patties or you can drizzle and sprinkle these two ingredients on both sides of the patties.
What Makes Traeger Rub So Special?
Traeger Rub is an all-in-one seasoning used on meat to give it a perfect balance of sweet, savory and spicy touch. It comes with an ideal amount of sugar, salt, paprika, and many slices and herbs! So, you do not have to worry about gathering all the seasonings when you really have everything at one place.
Tip: Combined with BBQ Sauce, Traeger Rub gives the meat an exemplary smoky flavor!
- Choosing The Right Flavorful Wood
The suitable woods for beef are hickory, mesquite, cherry and pecan. If you are in the mood for something strong, go for hickory and mesquite. And if you are craving something slightly sweet then cherry and pecan will surely satisfy your sweet tooth.
So, choose your favorite wood pellets, and add it in the hopper of your Traeger grill. Turn the dial of Traeger to smoke, so the wood pellets can ignite and start creating the smoke for your upcoming cooking process! This will take not more than 10 minutes.
Once that clean and nice smoke starts coming out of the Traeger, add your burger patties inside, close the lid, and let it get smoked for around 30 minutes. After that, set the temperature to 300° F and let the patties get properly cooked for about 40 minutes or until the desired internal temperature is reached. And of course, do not forget to flip the patties halfway through the cooking time!

You can track the internal temperature of the patties by using a meat probe thermometer that comes with a Traeger.
- Assemble and Serve
Once your hamburgers in Traeger are done cooking, take them out because it is time to assemble everything at one place!
Before assembling, I like to give my burger buns a little toast with a dash of butter. Once done, assemble your burger with your favorite burger condiments! From bottom to top, my burger comes with Mustard, Iceberg Lettuce, Slice of Tomato, Burger Patty, Cheddar Cheese and Caramelized Onions!
For cheeseburgers, add a slice of cheddar cheese on top of the flipped side of the patty and let it stay in the Traeger for 2-3 minutes.
How To Caramelize Onions in a Traeger?
Caramelizing onion is a super easy process. You will be needing only three things for that. Iron griddle, Butter and Onions of course!
Put the iron griddle inside the Traeger before heating it up. Give your griddle a nice coat of butter, and then add sliced onions in it to get the caramelizing started! Onions only get caramelized when cooked slowly, so make sure you are cooking these onions slowly to get them nicely soft and perfectly caramelized.
What Temperature Should You Cook Hamburgers on a Pellet Grill?
The ideal temperature to grill your hamburger is somewhere between 350° F – 450° F. Grilling and Smoking your burgers are two different things. Grilling is comparatively faster, while smoking, on the other hand, requires low and slow method – ideally done between 275° F – 300° F.
When monitoring the temperature, it is more crucial to keep an eye on the internal temperature of the meat – the ideal internal temperature is 150° F – 160° F.
How Long To Cook Burgers on a Traeger?
Burgers on a Traeger take 40 minutes to get done perfectly inside – 160° F internal temperature. If you are not a fan of well-done burgers, you can go for rare or medium burgers as well! Rare and medium burgers will take even less time to cook.
- For rare: 130° F internal temperature (takes around 15 minutes)
- For medium: 140° F internal temperature (takes 20-25 minutes)
Burgers normally do not take extraordinary time to get cooked, however, there are few factors that affect the duration.

- Thickness of Patties
Thicker the patty, more time it will take to cook. Ideal thickness is 1 or 1 ½ inch.
- Amount of Wood Pellets
Since Traeger is wholly fueled by wood pellets, it is important to know that you are adding the right amount of woods. Too much pellets increase the chances of your Traeger catching fire, while less pellets will have your Traeger struggling to get to high temperature.
Traeger Burger Recipe
- 2 Pounds Ground Beef
- 2 Tablespoons BBQ Sauce
- 1 Tablespoons Traeger Rub
- 4 Burger Buns
- 4 Slices of Cheddar Cheese (for cheeseburger)
Burger Condiments (not included in calories and nutritional values)
- Iceberg Lettuce
- Caramelized Onions
- Get a 2 pound ground beef and divide it into 4 ½-pound patties. Make surethe patties are greater than the size of burger buns, and is at least 1 inchthick.
- Season your patties generously with 1 tablespoon of Traeger Rub and 2tablespoons of BBQ.
- Add your favorite wood pellets in the hopper.
- Turn the dial of your Traeger Pellet Grill to smoke, and give it about 5to 10 minutes to get the smoke.
- Once the smoke starts ejecting out, put the patties on the grate and shutthe lid of Traeger. Smoke the burger patties for 30 minutes.
- For caramelizing onions, add an iron griddle in Traeger, grease it withbutter, and add the sliced onions. Let it get cooked slowly to get thecaramelized onions.
- After smoking the patties, turn the dial to preferably 300° F for 40minutes or until the desired internal temperature reached. Flip the pattieshalfway through the cooking time.· 125° F – rare· 135° F – medium-rare· 145° F – medium· 150° F – medium-well· 160° F – well-done
- For cheeseburgers, add a slice of cheddar cheese on each patty for 2 to 3minutes before taking it out, so it melts down completely.
- Butter up the Burger buns and toast it in the Traeger.
- Assemble your burger with favorite sauces and toppings!
- Serve it hot with a side and a drink to complete your meal!
